This poem is a dedication to those who died 50 years ago in the 228 massacre on February 28, 1947. I was inspired to write this after seeing a 50th anniversary commemoration of the tragic incident at Columbia University. The performance was appropriately titled "Unfinished Dreams: 2-28", a theme that serves as the basis for my poem. It is my hope that everyone who reads this poem will be touched by it and remember those who gave up their lives in the name of justice.

Unfinished Dreams

They had a chance to say hello,
they had a chance to say good-bye,
they had a chance to fulfill their dreams,
but none of that ever happened.

They were murdered,
murdered until 20,000 were dead.
Their dreams went unfinished,
their hopes of justice diminished.

A man dying, a child crying,
Was this what it all came down to?
Death, tears, anger, and sorrow?

Unfinished dreams...how can I let go?
The truth is, I can't.
History books may make us forget,
but no, not for me.

It will only make me stronger,
more determined,
more willing to fight...
In honor of those forgotten heroes,
your dreams will never go unfinished.
