Dear Fellow Taiwanese American,

My name is Tommy Tan and I am the President of the Society of Taiwanese Americans - New England Chapter (SOTA-NE) located in Boston. I would like to invite you, your family and friends to join us this summer at the 1997 Taiwanese American Conference/East Coast (TAC/EC), which will be held on July 3-6th at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. I would also to introduce you to our organization and our sponsorship of the 1997 TAC/EC Second Generation Program.

The Society of Taiwanese Americans, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization founded by post-college second generation Taiwanese Americans in 1993. It was created as an organization dedicated to addressing the needs and concerns of the post-college Taiwanese American community. SOTA's main purpose includes building a more unified community of Taiwanese Americans for future generations, to retain our Taiwanese heritage, and to strengthen the identity of Taiwanese Americans in American society.

The New England Chapter of SOTA is a strong believer in these grassroots and community enriching objectives and we cited them as the foundation of our efforts. As a method of accomplishing some of our objectives, we coordinate and help sponsor events with various local Taiwanese American organizations to encourage unity, organize a blend of cultural and social activities, and are working hard to build a cultural information database as a resource to our members.

SOTA-NE is the proud sponsor of the second generation program of TAC/EC 1997. As sponsor, SOTA provides the ideas, man power, relationships, and coordination skills for the planning and execution of the second generation TAC/EC program. Conforming with the TAC tradition, SOTA is volunteering its resources to TAC as a service to and for the benefit of our community, neither expecting nor receiving any financial compensation of any form.

The Taiwanese American Conference - East Coast (TAC/EC) is an annual conference started by the first generation Taiwanese Americans as a grassroots and inspirational retreat designed for individuals and families, with custom program schedules for each age group. TAC stems back over a decade and attracts an audience of approximately 1000 attendees, of all ages, across the East Coast. TAC is also a non-profit organization which has relied on the generosity and energy of emphatic and respected members of the Taiwanese American community.

Lily Chen, co-founder of SOTA and SOTA-NE, has been appointed as the Director of the 2nd generation TAC/EC program. This year's conference theme is the "21st Century Outlook" and we would like to provide the attendees with a empowering collection of tools and knowledge to prepare them for the next century. We have composed a program that includes: a brief history of where the Taiwanese have come from; guidance programs on topics such as schools, careers, and adapting to American society; and, tools and resources available to help everyone - so we can all continue to look forward from here.

We want to make TAC/EC 1997 a rewarding and enlightening experience for you and all of the participants. On behalf of Lily Chen, SOTA-NE, and our community, I would like to extend to you our warmest welcome and would be most grateful if you would make a note in your schedule to come join us on the July 4th weekend. If you have any thoughts or concerns, feel free to contact Michael at your earliest convenience. Thank You!

Sincerely,

Tommy Tan, President
