Day 6, Delphi

The round Tholos Temple in the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, built around 4th-century BC.
Pilgrims built the Sanctuary of Athena first before they built the Sanctuary of Apollo.
Tholos is widely recognized by its colored marble, and the fact that it is a round temple.

The Gymnasium and Plunge Bath, adjacent to the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia.

Then we walked across the main road over to Sanctuary of Apollo.
Menelaos showed us a drawing of what the Sanctuary of Apollo looked like in its full glory.
With Agora, Treasury, Offices, Temple, Theater, Stadium, monuments, no wonder
it was considered the center of the universe.

The 6 remaining columns of Temple of Apollo.

Remains of the Temple of Apollo

The Theater above the Temple of Apollo.

The stadium for Pythian games, located at a 15-min walk up above the Temple of Apollo.

Marble walk ways in Sanctuary of Apollo.

Inside Delphi Museum. This is Sphinx of the Naxians, dating from 560 BC.
The white marble statue was an offering from the people of Naxos to the Sun God Apollo.
(We'd visit the island of Naxos on Day 11.)

Apollo with a crow, painted on a dish. (In Delphi Museum)
Vincent saw replicas of this dish in Delphi, but did not buy it then.
The last day when we were in Athens he wanted to buy a dish with this painting
as a souvenir, but could not find any souvenir shop selling this item.

The much-celebrated life-size Bronze Charioteer. (Delphi Museum)

The Charioteer was a part of this bronze chariot set.

The bus took us to Delphi village for free time and lunch on our own.
We liked the views of this establishment, but the shop sells only ice cream and beverage, no lunch.

The camera man is seldom in front of camera, but here he is.
The town in the background is Itea by the Gulf of Corinth, where we had grilled fish the day before.

(We later found a restaurant with similar views for lunch, and met a British couple,
Ian and Sue, who traveled with a RV and had been on the road for 5 months.
We exchanged URL so that we may read each other's travel stories afterwards.)

Buying Olive oil soap for souvenir at a shop in Delphi village.

Getting ready to board Andy's bus to go back to our hotel at Arachova.
