Yokohama (10/9/2025)
There are a few daily Shinkansen trains running between Okayama and Tokyo without change.
We took one of these trains departing at 9:06 for today's journey to Yokohama.
More Shinkansen trains are available with a change in Shin-Osaka.
VT loves ekiben.
He bought one at Okayama Station for lunch on the train.
The west exit of Yokohama Station.
The train station connects to department stores, malls, and corridors that lead to various train lines
heading in different directions. It was huge and very busy!
On street corners near the train station, we saw several enclosures like this,
which are for smokers to smoke inside them.
Our taxi driver dropped us off at one of the bustling streets in Chinatown.
A multitude of neons and billboards greeted us.
Upon a closer look, they seemed to offer similar things:
dim sum, a variety of buns, xiao long bao, Taiwanese fried chicken fillet (炸雞排), boba tea, ...
... and shaved ice, etc..
Some have seating inside; some don't.
But how can we determine which shop is more authentic in what they hawk?
We chose a restaurant with a large billboard advertising "Taiwan xiao long bao",
but it was not authentic xiao long bao.
The two stir-fry dishes we ordered were subpar, without any charred aroma
from the wok.
Several fortune-telling parlors appeared to be thriving, with long lines of young people waiting.
I wonder whether each fortune-teller needs an interpreter sitting beside him
or whether he/she can speak Japanese, English, and Chinese to cater to an
international clientele.
This Shanghai xiao long bao appears to attract a lot of foot traffic,
and it offers seating on the 2nd floor.
