Day12 to Day14, Middle Rhine (7/7 ~ 7/9/2025)

A bird's-eye view of our Middle Rhine itinerary:
3 is Cologne, our gateway to Germany.
4 is Koblenz, our base for 2 nights in the Middle Rhine region.
5 is Frankfurt Airport, from where we flew home.

4.1 is Bacharach, where we boarded a KD Rhine River Cruise to St. Goar.
4.2 is St. Goar.
4.3 is Boppard.
4.4 is Cochem, on the Mosel River.
The red arrow points to Bingen, which marks the southern boundary of the Middle Rhine region.

Our twin rooms at the Hotel Brenner in Koblenz were very charming.
On the right was Angelina and Gabby's room; it featured a wooden floor and beautiful wooden shelves.
On the left was MC's room, which was bright and sunny.
(We saw some rooms facing the courtyard garden even feature enclosed balconies.)

At the tip of the triangular headland in the Deutsches Eck, Koblenz, where the Mosel River on the left
merges to the Rhine River on the right, which then flows north toward Amsterdam.
The dark sky foretold an imminent heavy downpour.

The joyful folks were on the cable car to the fortress, Koblenz.

The heavy downpour.
This freeze frame from Angelina's video captures those up at the fortress during the intense rain.
For MC and Austin, who remained in the Deutsches Eck park, we were thoroughly soaked,
as our small umbrellas offered no defense against the heavy downpour.

Hotel Brenner's breakfast room was lovely.

A screen shot of the train schedule displayed on our iPhone.
We used the DB (Deutsche Bahn) app on our iPhone to search for the train schedule.
Having purchased a rail pass valid for the entire day, we no longer needed to pay attention to the individual fares.
Instead, we simply chose the regional train that best suited our schedule to get from point A to point B.

KD River Cruise's 2025 high-season schedule on the Middle Rhine section.
Cruising upstream (southbound) takes considerably more time than cruising downstream (northbound).
However, it now seems they operate different boats sailing at varying speeds and stopping for different durations.
We took the train from Koblenz to Bacharach, then boarded the 12:00 boat cruising downstream to St. Goar.

In front of Altkölnischer Hof (literally Old Cologne Court), a historical hotel and restaurant in Bacharach.
The building features half-timbered German architecture,
which is typical of the Rhineland-Palatinate region.

Waiting for our 12:00 boat at the Bacharach's K-D river cruise dock.
K-D was acquired by Viking Cruises in 2000.
As a result, Viking river ships can dock at any of KD's docks.

Our K-D boat has arrived.

A castle that we passed while sailing on the boat.
The looming black cloud quickly turned into heavy rain, prompting everyone
on the open top deck to seek shelter in the dining room below.

Lorelei Rock as seen from our boat.

Burg Katz (Cat Castle), which sits on the cliffs above the town of Sankt Goarshausen,
directly across the river from Sankt Goar.

A late lunch at the town square of Boppard.

Platforms at the Boppard train station.
We were waiting for a train to go back to Koblenz.

Dinner was at the Wirtshaus Alt Coblenz in the old town of Koblenz.
Philip selected this restaurant based on good reviews, and the lady at our hotel's front desk
also recommended this restaurant.

Austin's steak with mushroom & salad looked like a winner.

A good time was had by all.

7/9 was our final day of sightseeing on this trip.
We took a train to visit Cochem in the Mosel Valley.
Train time from Koblenz was either 49m or 35m, depending on
how many stops the train made along the way.

The town of Cochem.

For lunch, we selected a pretty riverfront café.

The food at the cafe was okay.
One generally doesn't set a high culinary bar for a casual cafe.

A photo with Cochem in the background.

Both girls were very happy with their spacious "Family Room" at the Frankfurt Airport Marriott.

Dinner was at the restaurant between the Marriott and Sheraton.

A snapshot of the bustling Hauptwache square in downtown Frankfurt.
The church with the tall tower in the photo is St. Catherine's Church (German: Katharinenkirche).
Hauptwache is one of the most famous plazas in the city. It lies to the west of Konstablerwache with
both squares linked by the Zeil, the central shopping street of the city.
